No More Resolutions

Did you make New Year’s resolutions?

I didn’t and I’ll tell you why.

The first time I left Toronto to visit California I was ecstatic to find myself walking around in shorts & t-shirt and surfing in the middle of winter. More than a reprieve, the dramatic change in my physical environment made me feel like I could do anything I wanted. I wanted to surf.

A few years later I moved to San Diego. While I loved being there, the novelty of warm weather all the time soon wore off. The act of living took up my days I began to take my environment and other things for granted. Days went by without my visiting the ocean I loved so much. Sometimes weeks. I had stuff to do. The waves would have to surf themselves.

About a year later my brother came to visit with a friend of his. The waves were small to the point of useless and the friend lost his keys on the beach. And the level of their stoke was unbelievable.

It shocked me back to remembering how amazing it was to be here, now, two blocks from the ocean. Surfboards in my backyard. What the hell was wrong with me?

Complacency is sneaky. And it’s a major cause of leader isolation and the poor decisions that come with it.

I struggled with this for years and now I want to help other people solve that problem. To break the self-inflicted condition of not going further- believing that your prior experiences are sufficient knowledge. To do more of what you love, whatever that might be right now, and make it your reality. Again and again.

I have come to realize that ultimately, all of my work is about helping people see how they can live the life they truly want. I have also learned the best way to do that is to inspire people by continually doing it myself. That’s why I don’t make resolutions. Because inspiring is not a thing to do, it’s a thing to be.

I believe reality is a construct. That we all have the ability to re-invent ourselves as needed. All we need is a reminder and a little help.
