Eight Days (Mari’s Song)

Eight Days (Mari’s Song)

They broke the pact, took you away

alone behind, door and gate

things were missed, seen too late

life and love resigned to fate

I hid from sight, a scream, a fight,

on tape waiting to play

Folds of green handed over

a tiny thing not yet older

What is life without a love

What is child without a mother

Will she last will she turn over

There is no us without each other

The elder couple hold and coo

marking time and fondling

It’s family now as hours pass

empty, scared and wondering

What is life without a love

What is child without a mother

Will she last will she turn over

There is no us without each other

Eight days endured, delirious

hard nights on the floor

A pump, a clock, plastic tubing

mark the steady mind’s undoing

And then it ends, tumble home

weak, dazed, confused

And now begins our life with him

you, me and Adam

What is life without a love

What is child without a mother

She did persist, she did turn over

All of us have each other.
